Perrigo, a leading global provider of consumer self-care products, faced a significant challenge in ensuring the safety of its workers in high-temperature environments while wearing heavy personal protective equipment (PPE). With the demanding nature of their work, the company needed a reliable solution to monitor the safety of their workforce and prevent heat-related injuries.
There was a need to monitor the safety of workers in heavy PPE across facilities” – said Rob Somers, Senior Director of EHS at Perrigo.
Perrigo turned to SlateSafety's integrated wearable solution to address the heat stress challenges faced by its workers. The SlateSafety system, which includes the BAND V2 wearable device, SlateSafety Cloud, and SlateSafety Software, provides real-time monitoring of critical biometrics such as heart rate, body temperature, and exertion levels
The SlateSafety solution is designed to be easy to use, with the worker simply wearing the BAND V2 device while conducting their daily tasks. The data collected by the device is then transmitted to the SlateSafety Cloud. The system integrates with Benchmark Gensuite’s Concern Reporting and Near Miss reporting processes, automatically logging incidents via APl and triggering notifications to key stakeholders when configurable threshold limits for core body temperatures and heart rate readings are exceeded.
Perrigo’s EHS leaders are also leveraging Benchmark Gensuite’s dashboards and analytics to receive a holistic view of real-time statuses and insights into heat-related concerns and risks. The dashboard’s heatmap offers a helpful visual component to equip leaders to better spot patterns & trends within the data.
Since implementing SlateSafety and Benchmark Gensuite at two of its sites, approximately three heat-related incidents have been prevented per week, with over 191 concern reports created in total from data transmitted from SlateSafety to the Benchmark Gensuite platform via API.
“This technology has proved invaluable in mitigating heat stress,” Somers said.
The real-time alerts provided by the SlateSafety system have enabled Perrigo to take immediate action, prompting workers to rehydrate, take breaks, or adjust their work-rest cycles as needed to prevent heat-related incidents. Perrigo’s implementation of the SlateSafety system has been a resounding success, with the company experiencing no heat-related injuries while using the system over the past three years. During this period, the company has achieved 140,000 safe hours worked without a heat-related lost workday case.
Perrigo's partnership with SlateSafety has positioned the company as a leader in workplace safety, particularly in industries where workers are exposed to high temperatures and demanding physical conditions.
As Perrigo continues to leverage the power of integrated wearable technology and data-driven insights, the company is poised to further enhance its safety culture, protect its workforce, and maintain its reputation as a responsible and innovative employer.
