The Challenge:

GE Vernova is a global leader in energy technology, offering products and services that span the entire energy value chain. With a strong focus on operational safety and sustainability, GE Vernova faced a challenge in consistently monitoring personal protective equipment (PPE) usage across its global operations. They needed a scalable solution to enhance PPE monitoring, reduce risks, and increase workplace safety across its facilities worldwide.

Key challenges included:

The Solution:

Benchmark Gensuite’s Safety Observations application supports behavior-based safety programs for real-time insights into safety risks in the workplace, and for promoting safe employee behaviors and work activities.

To meet these challenges, GE Vernova partnered with Benchmark Gensuite and Avathon, formerly SparkCognition, to integrate Computer Vision technology with Benchmark’s digital platform. This innovative solution involved using on-site cameras to automatically detect safety triggers, such as forklift speeding and improper PPE usage, and log them into Benchmark’s Concern Reporting and Incident Management tools.

The solution offered:

Real-time Monitoring: Cameras continuously monitored workplace activity, automatically identifying PPE concerns and other safety risks.

Automated Reporting: Detected incidents were instantly logged into the Benchmark platform, allowing safety managers to take immediate action.

Scalable Implementation: GE Vernova began with pilot programs at its Hungary and Saudi Arabia locations, with plans to expand to more sites over time.

According to Ronald Wissenburg, Senior Director of Quality and EHS IT at GE Power (now GE Vernova), the Computer Vision initiative started small but quickly proved valuable. “In the first week, we turned on the system and 50 PPE concerns were raised,” he shared. This real-time visibility allowed GE Power to address safety risks immediately and foster a stronger safety culture across its teams.

How It Works

The Avathon Computer Vision technology uses artificial intelligence in the form of a convolutional neuro network (CNN) to create a virtual map that analyses the total operational area and configures alarms for specified hazards, using live CCTV camera feeds from onsite video monitoring systems.

When Avathon’s technology identifies those occurrences from the live camera footage, the details are automatically submitted via API into the Benchmark Gensuite platform.

A concern reporting form is then created and notifications are sent out to key team members so that personnel can take immediate action whenever non-compliances are flagged. GE Vernova is leveraging Benchmark Gensuite’s pre-built dashboards to provide safety leaders with a comprehensive overview of all safety concerns logged via various methods, including not only through computer vision but also through desktop and mobile devices, to gain unprecedented visibility into near misses and identify improvement areas more efficiently and systematically.

The Result:

With the successful implementation of Computer Vision technology and Benchmark Gensuite’s integrated platform, GE Vernova saw significant improvements in PPE monitoring and overall workplace safety. Key results include:

Key results include:

50 PPE concerns identified in the first week of the system’s operation, highlighting previously overlooked safety issues.

Reduction in incidents over time, as the solution allowed GE Vernova to address concerns proactively, leading to fewer safety violations.

Improved Safety Culture: By sharing safety data in meetings and reports, the company increased awareness and accountability among employees, leading to better adherence to PPE protocols.

Ronald Wissenburg noted that this data-driven approach has transformed how the company manages safety. “By communicating and using this in the reporting, and in talking about it in meetings, the cases started to go down. That’s when we knew we had a successful proof of concept,” he said.
